Vaal Route
This picturesque circular route starts in the Freestate town of Parys. Parys is a fast developing tourist destination that caters for adventure activities and is also developing a rich art and cultural experience for visitors.

The route loosely follows the Vaal River on the North West  province side and then crosses the river approximately half way to follow the river back up to Parys on the Free State side. Mostly gravel roads and three very short stretches of tarred road.

The Vredefort Dome area was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2005 (wikipedia.org). This route is almost entirely situated inside this World Heritage site. For this reason please respect the environment. No littering and cowboy biking! Please stay on the dirt roads and respect this wonderful part of South Africa.

Province: Free State, North West
Town: Parys
Distance: 152km
Description: Gravel roads in the Vredefort Dome area.

This route is defnitely one of my favourite routes for a few reasons: - It is close to Johannesburg. - I can get there, have breakfast, ride the route and be back home in JHB easily in one day. - Parys is a picture perfect little town on the Vaal. - Relaxed and non-technical riding on dirt roads with great views of the Vaal River. - It happens to be the first dual purpose bike route that I ever rode. (OK, so call me sentimental).

I downloaded the GPS file but my Mapsource wouldn't open it (it is old, circa 2001). What version of Mapsource are you using ?
