Legally you need:
- At least a learners license.
- A helmet.
- A road worthy motorcycle.

The easy route:
- Book a date for your learners license (this can be quite tricky and takes some time).
- While waiting for your learners test date you can go on an introductory course to bike riding. There are a few very good courses.
- Pass your learners test.
- Talk to people who own bikes.
- Start reading up on bikes.
- Get friends who own bike to give you tips.
- Buy a bike that is suitable for beginners. In dual-purpose bike terms it means something like a 650cc.
- Get the gear. Wear the gear always when riding.
- Practise, practise and practise. Get comfortable on the bike. Get to know it well.
- Go on more courses to get your skill level up.
- Apply for and pass your license test before your learners expires.

The gear for beginners:
- A helmet. SABS / CE approved.
- A bike jacket that fits correctly and has padding. Also SABS / CE approved.
- Good gloves.
- Boots with ankle protection.
