This is what I have been waiting for. Google has gone South. More precisely they have gone South African! They now offer driving directions and better coverage.
Google has now updated the Google Maps coverage for South Africa. You can now go directly to South Africa by using the link maps.google.co.za
The other great thing is that the coverage has been dramatically improved. The road that I live in used to be a line on Google Maps without any name. It just stated "Road". It now actually displays my road and even it can give directions from my gate to almost anywhere in South Africa.
Getting directions has been active in many countries, but up to now was disabled for South Africa. I tried getting directions to different towns and also street addresses and was surprised that it came up with almost all the locations I tried. Nice work Google.
Maybe being the host nation for the Soccer World Cup in 2010 has more perks than expected.
