 An off-road motorbike rider is recovering in a Centurion hospital after being shot at De Wildt, north of Pretoria at the weekend.

 Nick Swann and his friend Brad Holley were riding near the old De Wildt Police Station when Swann's chain came off his bike.

 Two men stopped to help him but once the chain was replaced one of the men pulled out a gun and shot the rider in the leg.

 Holley said he rushed to help his friend.

 "I was at the top of the hill, with my helmet off, waiting for Nick to come and then I heard a gun shot and him screaming my name so I put my helmet back on and rode back down the hill and found him lying in the bush and when I asked him what happened he said he had just been shot," Holley said.

 The gunmen made off with Swann's tools.

 The rider was airlifted to the Unitas Hospital where he underwent surgery on Saturday.
