The SHARP motorcycle helmet test specification has been going for a long time, but they have launched a new website with interesting information on helmets. SHARP is the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Program of the UK government. The new website now has free information on the star rating of helmets tested. It is really interesting to see that some "cheap" helmets get five star ratings and some expensive jobbies only two or three stars. This star rating is similar to the Euro NCAP rating for cars.

According to the UK government they can save 50 lives annually if people looked at the star rating and bought better helmets. The list is not very extensive, but they will be adding a lot of new helmets and tests soon, so keep checking back on the site. There currently is a lack of adventure and off road helmet tests, but hopefully that will be included soon.

While on the site also have a look at the "Getting the right fit" guide. Very good information about how a helmet should fit and what to look for.
